Information

Almazán is located in the province of Soria, on the banks of the Duero. It stands at the junction of several roads, on the site of a Moorish fort, from which it takes its name; Almazán means “The Fortified Place”.

The old quarter is encircled by a 12th–13th century wall, through which three main gates and two posterns still afford access. The mansion of the Hurtado de Mendoza family stands on the Plaza Mayor. The ground floor hosts an unexpected artistic jewel: four panels painted by renowned Flemish artist Hans Memling (1435-1494).

The most traditional folk event in the town is the festival of San Pascual Bailón (St Paschal Baylon) or “El Zarrón”.

Plaza Mayor

The square is the centre of the town’s secular and festive life. It also contains some of the town's most important buildings and monuments: the Palace of the Hurtado de Mendoza family, the Church of San Miguel, the Town Gate, the Town Hall and a spectacu

Hurtado de Mendoza Palace

The structure of this immense mansion was built and restored on several occasions in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The northern area is the oldest part, and the interesting gallery dates back to the period spent here by the Catholic Monarchs.

Walled Town

Built between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the walls help underpin the significance of the town’s original Moorish title, ”The Fortified Place”. There are three gates, La Villa, Herreros y del Mercado and two posterns, San Miguel y de Santa María

Memling Museum

The ground floor of the Hurtado de Mendoza Palace houses a visitor reception centre, with a tourist information office and a museum of fifteenth-century panels by renowned Flemish painter, Hans Memling.

Church of Nuestra Señora del Campanario (Our Lady of the Bell Tower)

Early thirteenth-century church in Romanesque style. Important features include the three naves in different heights and the triple apse, designed in the style of churches in Burgundy.

Church of San Pedro (St. Peter)

This baroque seventeenth-century church was the result of a union between the medieval parishes of St. Peter/St Paul and St. Andrew. The interior features a high altarpiece by Felix Malo (1778) and a carving of the Pietà by Gabriel Navarro.

Church of Santa María in Calatañazor

Beautiful church with typical sixteenth-century groined star vaults, and an outstanding altarpiece in the Romanist style by Juan Sanz and Juan de Orihuela, master artists who also worked on the cathedral of Sigüenza.

Jesus Chapel

Seventeenth-century baroque chapel. The interior features a high altarpiece with images of the town's patron Jesus of Nazareth, and a magnificent carving from the school of Gregorio Fernández.

San Vicente – Cultural Centre

The former parish church of St Vincent, with its mid-twelfth century Romanesque chancel and doorway, is now a multi-purpose arts centre. The arches in the tambour of the apse and a number of Gothic murals are of particular interest.

La Merced Convent

Following the government’s seizure of Church property in the 19th-century “Disentailment”, only the baroque facade, chapel and part of the cloister were left standing. A listed national monument, the site contains the burial place of Tirso de Molina.

Santa Clara Convent

Of particular interest is the seventeenth-century facade and the coat of arms over the main door. The property is encircled by the cylindrical Rollo de las Monjas tower. The convent is now privately owned and rented out for functions.

Tirso de Molina Arts Centre

Housed in a palace built in the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, the centre hosts the public library and the municipal school of music; there are also screening rooms and a conference room for symposiums, congresses and other events.

La Arboleda Park

On the other side of the original pedestrian bridge spanning the River Duero is the La Arboleda Park. This huge natural area is an ideal venue for anyone wanting to practise sport and other leisure activities or just relax. It is also used as a fair groun

Church of San Miguel (St Michael)

This twelfth-century Romanesque church has been a listed national monument since 1931 for the originality of its artwork. Its unusual architecture and splendid ribbed vault with Moorish influences make it well worth a visit.
