Standing in the mid-western area of Navarre, it is the main town in the Tierra Estella region. Two major European cultural routes pass through Estella- Lizarra — the Camino de Santiago and the Caminos de Sefarad (Sepharad Ways), giving the town a unique multicultural character. It hosts a wealth of historical and artistic heritage. Wander through the streets and discover its many churches (mostly in the Romanesque and Gothic styles), convents and monasteries, mansions, palacetes and stately homes.

And while in Estella-Lizarra, don’t miss the local cuisine, famous for its market produce. Signature dishes include kidney beans (calbotes) and pocha beans. However, the town is best-known for its suckling pig (gorrín) and each year celebrates the “Day of the Glorification of the Gorrín”.

What to see

Church of San Miguel (St Michael)

This twelfth-century church has a magnificent chevet with three semi-circular apses. However the highpoint is the late-Romanesque Gospel doorway, bordered by five columns on each side.

Church of San Pedro de la Rua (St Peter)

This is the largest church in the town. The thirteenth-century doorway shows Moorish influences, with Romanesque decorations of plants, geometric figures and figurative elements, including harpies, sirens, centaurs and griffins.

Church of El Santo Sepulcro (the Holy Sepulchre)

The fourteenth-century Gothic doorway takes the form of a large triumphal arch with elaborate decoration on the tympanum depicting the passion, death and resurrection of Christ, crowned by the Cross.

Palace of the Monarchs of Navarre

Built in the second half of the twelfth century, this is the finest example of secular Romanesque architecture in Navarre. The capital depicts the fight between Roland and the giant Ferragut (or Ferracutus).
