Take a moment to forget time, stroll around the streets and soak up the flavour of the sea or be transported by the architecture of its medieval streets whilst listening to the town’s history via the silence of its walls.

Informations

Hondarribia has a rich heritage. Evidence from prehistoric sites indicates that the town was populated over 5000 years ago. Today’s town was founded by the Romans, as attested by remains found unearthed in Hondarribia and the existence of the Roman port or anchorage of Asturiaga. The town’s heyday came in the Middle Ages, when large walls were built and the town was granted important privileges by successive Spanish monarchs. The northern variant of the Camino de Santiago passes through the town.

Hondarribia has a strong fishing tradition and the industry still plays an important part in the town’s everyday life, together with small-scale family farming. The Marina district is a listed Historical and Artistic site.

Cuisine with Basque soul and the finest seasonal products. Good food is one of the great Basque passions and visitors wanting to enjoy some of the region’s tastiest and most innovating dishes will find a complete range of restaurants ranked highly in some of the world’s top guides, together with a varied selection of sidrerías (cider houses).

Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe (Our Lady of Guadalupe)

First constructed in the sixteenth century, the church was rebuilt on several occasions. The present building dates from the nineteenth century.

La Marina Church

Also known as La Magdalena (Mary Magdalene), construction on the church began in 1921. It contains a fresco by Gaspar Montes Iturrioz.

Santa María Gate

Santa María was one of the two main gateways leading into the town. It formerly featured a drawbridge, guardhouses and even a chapel.

Church of the Capuchinos (Capuchin Friars)

The monastery was built in the years following 1663. It is well situated and has an orchard on the north side.

Plaza de armas

As well as being employed as a parade ground by the local garrison, this square was also used by municipal authorities for reading proclamations and staging receptions, bullfights and other popular festivities.

Chapel of Santa Barbara

Chapel of Santa Barbara: located on Mount Jaizkibel, close to the Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. The chapel stands at the end of a Via Crucis, and is fronted by three large stone crosses.

Historical centre

The entire historical centre of Hondarribia encompassing the original area of the walled town, is a listed monument. A large section of the old wall and bastions is still standing.

Chapel of Santiago (St James)

Chapel of Santiago: Although the exact date of construction is not known, the chapel is mentioned in fifteenth-century documents. Inside, there is a sixteenth-century apple wood carving.

Calle Mayor

Stroll along the cobbles and admire the eaves of the houses lining the street with their carved corbels, wrought-iron balconies and coats of arms.

Portu Auzoa (Port district)

One of the town’s most iconic districts. With a strong seafaring atmosphere, it forms part of the central axis of the Hondarribia’s everyday life.

La Reina Bastion

Built in the sixteenth century, the bastion’s two courtyards are joined by a tunnel above which the old gun platform stands.

Castle of San Telmo (St Elmo)

The castle was built in 1598 by King Philip II to protect ships sheltering in the harbour from marauding pirates and privateers.

San Nicolás Gate and San Nicolás Ravelin

Two San Nicolás gates are still standing today. The oldest, which formed part of the medieval defences, is a simple arch at the end of Calle San Nicolás.

Fort of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe (Our Lady of Guadalupe)

The fortress was built in 1900 on Mount Jaizkibel, close to the Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. It is the strongest fort in the fortified complex of Oyarzun.

Powder Magazine

Built in the seventeenth century, the powder magazine was used to store gun powder.

Towers of Mount Jaizkibel

The towers were built by troops on the Liberal side in the last Carlist War.

Plaza del Ovispo

This is one of the oldest squares in the town. It contains the Palencia or Echevestenea house, built in the Middle Ages. Cristóbal de Rojas y Sandoval, born in this house in 1502, went on to become the Archbishop of Seville.

Hatxeroa

Visitors to the walled town are welcomed by the figure of a sapper, the “Hatxero”. Sappers were military engineers who cleared the way for other troops.

Plaza de Gipuzkoa

This beautiful recently-constructed addition to the town was designed by architect Manuel Manzano Monís.

Castle of Emperor Charles V

Now a parador, this is one of the most important buildings in the town. It is a rectangular medieval fortress, built on the summit of the promontory.

Zuloaga Palace

An urban mansion located in the historical centre. The building mostly dates from the eighteenth century. It houses the municipal library and the office of historical records. It is a listed historical monument.

Eguiluz Palace

Also known as the House of Juana the Mad.

Etxebestenea Mansion House

This house, situated in the Plaza del Obispo, has witnessed many sieges and battles over the last ten centuries. Its stone walls are blackened and weathered by time and the elements.

Parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción y del Manzano (Our Lady of the Assumption and the Apple Tree)

The church was built in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries on the ruins of the old town walls. The design is Gothic with renaissance additions. The oldest part of the structure can be found in the facade facing the castle.
